The Saxon market town of Winchcombe has its own ‘grand house’, Sudeley Castle, where fashionable, pious Katherine Parr – last and surviving wife of Henry VIII – was married to Thomas Seymour. Bourton-on-the-Water, with its waterways and bridges, is often called the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ and villages such as Burford and Broadway are famed for their grand high streets lined with houses.
