Scotland – East of Edinburgh

Explore the East Lothian coast visiting towns like North Berwick and Haddington, where King Alexander II was born in 1198. There are many golf courses in the area including the well-known Muirfield. If you fancy a dram – you could visit the Glenkinchie distillery and learn how whisky is made.

In 1941 Rudolf Hess flew to this area of Scotland to speak with 14th Duke of Hamilton about negotiating peace between Germany and the UK. Further south are the Lammermuir Hills with charming villages built of the local red sandstone. Tantallon Castle has a splendid clifftop site facing the Bass Rock. It dates from 14th century and still has massive curtain walls.

The Bass Rock, out to sea, is home to one of the largest gannet colonies in Britain. Boat trips can be organised from North Berwick in summer. Just outside Edinburgh is Rosslyn Chapel, made famous by Dan Brown in the Da Vinci Code.
